IRD (Inland Revenue) Integration
File GST and Income Tax returns directly with Inland Revenue from inside the app.
π§ͺ Currently in IRD certification. OfficeTidy's IRD connection runs against Inland Revenue's test gateway while product certification with IRD is completed. Filing and receipts described below are being validated on that test gateway β treat this feature as beta until this notice is removed.
A direct connection from OfficeTidy to Inland Revenue's myIR system, letting you file GST returns and (for sole traders) your Individual Income Tax return without leaving the app.
Connecting
From the Financials/Office Admin menu, choose Connect Inland Revenue (IRD) β this opens myIR's own secure login. Sign in and grant consent, and you're returned to the app connected. If the connection ever expires or is revoked, a Session Expired prompt appears the next time you try to file.
Tax Settings
Financials β Tax Settings is where everything is configured:
- IRD number β your personal number for a Sole Trader, or the company/partnership's number otherwise, validated against IRD's own format before filing.
- Business structure β Sole Trader, Partnership, or Company.
- Non-resident for tax purposes toggle (Sole Trader only).
- Home Expense Claim % and Vehicle Expense Claim % β for home-office and mixed-use-vehicle apportionment, applied automatically across your GST and income tax figures.
- GST registration toggle, with filing frequency (monthly/2-monthly/6-monthly) and period start month once registered.
What OfficeTidy can (and can't) do for your business
A plain-language capability check built into Tax Settings, tailored to your business type:
- GST returns can be filed directly for any GST-registered business, regardless of structure.
- Individual Income Tax (IR3) can be filed directly for a Sole Trader only β a Partnership or Company needs an IR7 or IR4 return respectively, which isn't supported; connect Xero and have your accountant handle that filing instead.
- OfficeTidy always files under your own myIR login, never through a registered tax agent's account.
- Trusts, MΔori authorities, and superannuation funds aren't supported as business types; family assistance/student loan adjustments (IR215) and donation tax credits (IR526) aren't covered.
- Payday Filing for employees isn't handled at all.
GST filing
- The GST tab shows your filing obligations, with an overdue-returns banner if you've fallen behind.
- If IRD reports a different filing cycle than what's saved in your settings, a prompt offers to update your settings to match.
- Filing a return shows a review of your figures (gross sales, gross purchases, GST to pay or refund due) before submission.
- On success, you get an Official Receipt ID from IRD β worth saving for your records.
- A filed period can be unlocked for amendment (with a reason recorded) and resubmitted.
- If you're connected to Xero, filing shows a recommendation to file from Xero instead, so accountant-side adjustments aren't missed.
Income Tax (IR3) filing β Sole Trader
Review screen shows your business profit from OfficeTidy, other income and PAYE already paid, and your total taxable income, before you submit. Same receipt-on-success and amend-with-reason flow as GST.
Depreciable assets
Feed directly into your income tax figures:
- Low-value assets pool themselves automatically under the $5,000 threshold, using the lowest rate among pooled assets.
- Eligible new assets first used on or after 22 May 2025 automatically receive the 20% Investment Boost immediate deduction.
- Vehicle assets apportion their depreciation claim by your configured business-use percentage, same as running costs.
Disconnecting
Available alongside the connect option in the same menu, with a confirmation before your IRD connection is revoked.
